St. John's Summer Program for Youth (SPY)

The Program:
SPY campers are rising 2nd and 3rd grade children identified as at-risk by school professionals in the Carlisle and South Middleton School Districts. For eight weeks, the children participate in a full day of academic instruction in reading, writing, math, art, music and technology along with character development, field trips, swimming at the Carlisle pool, and outdoor recreation.

The SPY program is provided at no cost to the families, although parents do agree to volunteer with serving meals, reading to the children, or assisting with special projects.

The objectives of our program are to offer educational and hands-on learning activities for the campers, extend and improve physical activities, and involve parents in enrichment programs.

Our testing of reading and math skills for our young participants indicates that this all-day camp makes a significant difference in helping them to maintain or improve reading proficiency over the course of summer break from school.

SPY participates in the Pennsylvania Summer Food Service Program, meeting USDA breakfast and lunch guidelines for milk, protein and two servings of fruits and vegetables daily, as well as nutritious afternoon snacks.
