Our parish Middle School Youth (SPOT) will resume monthly gatherings in September, beginning this weekend on Saturday, September 6.  Everyone from the parish and community is invited to an outdoor concert from 4:00 to 5:00 in the parish Churchyard. The program will feature contemporary music performed by our own Bennett family (“Bennett and Company”!) and Scott Siciliano, who graduated in May from Messiah College as a music major.  The normal Saturday 5:00 Eucharist will be celebrated outside as well and the offering will benefit Project SHARE.  During the concert and following the Eucharist, the Youth Fellowship will have hot dogs, ice cream and drinks for sale also to benefit SHARE.  Plan to enjoy Contemporary Christian music and support Project Share!  Rain or shine!  If the weather does not cooperate, the events will be held in the Parish Hall.

The Senior High Youth Group will kick off for the fall with a cookout at David and Jane Stewart’s home on Saturday, September 13, at 6pm. (please note this correction from the WINGS)

The first Parish Forum of the season will meet on Sunday, September 7 and welcome Professor Brian Smith of Messiah College who will reflect on summer movies viewed from the Christian faith perspective.  And following the 10:15 Eucharist on September 7, there will be a Church School Teacher meeting.

Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at Greenridge on Monday, September 8 at 1pm.

The Davies Memorial Children's Library (upstairs in the Lloyd Center) is honored by recent generous donations from Dorothy Stevens, the Blitz family and Mary Lou Wessels.  Parents: please check the shelves at home and bring back any books that have been borrowed.  It's time to inventory!

The Carlisle Regional Medical Center will present a Health Fair on Saturday, September 13 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Live Well Center, located at 3 Alexandra Court, across the road from the Medical Center.  The first 200 people who bring a donation for Project Share will receive a Rita’s Italian Ice!  Free health screening will include blood pressure checks, skin cancer screenings, glaucoma and glucose and cholesterol testing, Dexa San and more.

We kick off our fall schedule on Sunday, September 14 with the annual parish Ministries Faire.  The various parish ministry organizations and commissions will have displays in the Parish Hall and be on hand to tell you about their work and invite you to take part. As part of the Ministries Faire, the Outreach Commission plans to build a “Pyramid of Peanut Butter”!  So, please bring a jar of Peanut Butter on September 14 to add to the Pyramid.

St. John’s Preschool is opening on September 15.  We are now enrolling children who are age 4 or 5 by October 1st.  Pick up a brochure from the information table. Share the great news with friends, family, and neighbors!  Plan to come to the Open House on Friday, September 12 at 6pm.

The Leadership Workshop that was to be presented on Thursday, August 21, has been changed.  Elements of this presentation will be given in combination with the Parish Council meeting on September 23rdAll are welcome to attend and you need not be a commission member to come and benefit from this information - and dessert.

Choir practices have resumed on Wednesday evenings:  Men and Youth from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm; Adults from 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm.  Singers are needed for both choirs:  Youth – boys and girls grade 3 and up; Adults – ages 16 and up.  Each choir sings twice a month at the 10:15 service.  See Janet Leyon or Susan Smith for more information.

St. John’s will once again be on hand at the Adams County Apple Festival, selling jars of delicious apple butter.  The festival runs the first two weekends of October.   We will need volunteers, morning and afternoon shifts, for Saturday and Sunday both weekends.  We sell a very high volume of apple butter, last year clearing a profit of about $10,000 for the support of our youth mission trips.  So, lots of volunteers are needed.  Please sign up to help and join the gang.  Although we work hard and are very busy, it is a very rewarding effort and a great opportunity to get to know other folks and make a real difference.

Those who have ordered the “Top Ten Reasons for Being an Episcopalian” shirts - please pick them up in the parish office!  If you didn’t order one, we still have a few adult medium and adult large left, and we can order more if you would like to have one!  A portion of the $15 cost goes to support the Youth Work Mission.

Also available in the office: a few copies of the newly published “Forbes Road” book.  This paper back publication does an outstanding job of telling the story of the Forbes Expedition across Pennsylvania in 1758 to capture Ft. Duquesne at the forks of the Ohio (now Pittsburgh).  As a travel book, it also includes features and attractions across the state, including a chapter on Carlisle and our surrounding region.  The cost is $20.

Remember that calendar events and the This Weekend e-mail are posted on the web site at www.stjohnscarlisle.org, as well as the current WINGS issue.

During the first two weeks of October, members of the parish will be invited to conversation groups in the homes of fellow parishioners, for healthy dialogue about the Strategic Mission Plan and the stewardship required to achieve our goals. Watch for more information coming in September, and consider attending one of these groups.

We are the “Peanut Butter Church” - remember to bring in your peanut butter donations for Project SHARE.  The need for Peanut Butter, a very important and popular staple, remains constant and we fall well short of meeting the needs for the over 1000 families who count on Project Share for monthly help.  Can you drop off just one or two jars each month?  You can leave your donations in the entrance Narthex of the Church or in the Parish Hall, using the collection bin just to the left inside the main door.
